Becoming a member

Young climbers between the ages of 7 and 18 wishing to join the club must demonstrate the necessary level of interest and commitment to being an active member of the club.

Kids wishing to join the club must have previous climbing experience. You must have your own harness, shoes and chalk bag. These can be purchased in either Elverys Sports (Oliver Plunkett Street) or Great Outdoors Shop at Awesome Walls Cork.

The club membership fee (€30) will go towards the purchase of climbing equipment (ropes, karabiners, slings, quickdraws etc), the training of coaches/leaders, the engagement of top coaches to give training sessions. Club funds will also be used to support our members in participating in climbing competitions. Club funds will be used to support away trips.

How to join

Parents and climbers should read the places available page to check if places are available in the club.

Once you have checked the places available page and confirmed that there is a space available then you should contact a committee member to arrange a meeting/assessment. Child & parent would attend an assessment session with head coach. MI Volunteer & Garda Vetting forms would need to be completed. If child passes assessment then membership forms need to be completed and membership would be immediate. If a place does not exist then child will go on a waiting list.

Please note, our club cannot cater for beginners, climbers seeking to join must have previous climbing experience. Completion of a a beginner course at an indoor wall (NICAS level two award at a minimum would be preferable).

The National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS) is a UK wide scheme designed to promote climbing development and accredit individual achievement on artificial climbing structures. It can be used as a starting point for people wishing to take up climbing and mountaineering. It is open to all candidates aged 7 and upwards.

The scheme is administered by the Association of British Climbing Walls Training Trust (ABCTT) and is recognised by the British Mountaineering Council, the Mountaineering Council of Scotland and the Mountaineering Ireland.

Awesome Walls Cork is a NICAS awarding centre.

In addition to above a parent/guardian of each child must join as a volunteer. Parents/guardians will be required to assist in the running of the club, be it at the training nights, away days, competitions, fund raising etc. Parents play a very important role in the club. Click here to read more.
