Gravity Autumn Bouldering Comp trip report by David Cussen

On Saturday last, the 8th of September, Gravity Climbing Centre held their seasonal competition. It was titled ‘Gravity’s Autumn Bouldering Comp’. A CYCC team took part, five members ‘Captain’ Dan, Jack Flynn, Jack Ryan, Ellen Griffin and myself. The competition consisted of 25 problems in which you had five hours to complete. The rules were simple, whoever gained the most points from topping as many problems as they could would walk away with first place and some goodies. These 25 top class problems were set by the Gravity route setting team and a visiting professional route-setter, from The Climbing Works, Sheffield, named Rob.

The day started at an unwelcome time of 8.30. The CYCC members arrived in Dublin at 11.00 which left us an hour to register and warm-up for the day ahead. For our members, this comp was an introduction to the season ahead of us! The atmosphere was electric but the company was chilled and relaxed about the day ahead. In total there were around sixty competitors. The standard was very high throughout the categories especially in the Junior Male category where the final scores were up there with the best of the seniors.

My favourite problem, along with many other competitors, was the red no. 4 on the slab on the left-hand side of the competition wall. It involved a sidewards running dyno across the wall to grasp a side-pull jug. A technical slab finished off this superb problem. “It was knarly dude..!” as the American ‘Rock’stars would say.

The day finished at five and the prize giving took place. Our members did very well seeing as it was our first comp of the season. We placed as follows: in junior male, Dave Cussen 2nd, Jack Flynn 4th and Jack Ryan 6th. In the Senior Male, Dan Flynn 8th, and finally, Ellen Griffin came 2nd in the Girls Category. Bon joue to all who competed. Looking forward to the next comp which is an IBL in Midleton, Co.Cork. Thanks also to John Ryan, Jack’s Dad, for driving on the day.
