IBL 2011 Round 1 Trip Report by Jack Ryan

IBL Round 1, DCU Dublin by Jack Ryan

It was the 8th of October, the day that I was going to be competing in the IBL along with Dave, Jack and Owen. I had been looking forward to it for a while now and I was getting excited as it would be my first competition. After getting up early to watch a disappointing match, my dad and I collected Dave, Jack and Owen and we hit the road!

We finally arrived at DCU and after a while we found the wall (and the toilets!). The place was packed with climbers from all over Ireland. We started on an easy problem and gradually made our way up to the hard stuff! There was a wide range of climbs like juggy overhangs at the start, vertical problems in the middle and technical slabs at the end. My dad was amazed at the climbers because it was his first proper experience of seeing people climb.

After successes and failures on the wall, the competition started to wind down.

We finally took a break by watching the prize giving. Unfortunately, there was no prizes for us Cork lads besides Jack when he left feeling happy when he won a raffled off hat! After a debate about who was sitting in the middle we set off for Cork. We stopped in a McDonalds when we felt the hunger pangs and after burgers, chips and wrong flavoured milkshakes, we began the journey home.

I really enjoyed the day and I am already looking forward to the next one!
