IBL 2011 Round 3 Trip Report by Dave Cussen

What a comp, epic, awesome, unreal

Great showing from CYCC, we had 8 competitors on the day,

these being Jack Flynn, Owen Flynn, Dan Flynn, Sean Flynn, Dave Hurley, Jack Ryan, Mark Sexton and myself. This day was to be the first high standard comp, with a circuit for each category. The comp was held at the newly built wall, Gravity Climbing Centre in Dublin. Each category (Male, Female and Junior male and female) was to complete 15 routes of high standard set by a professional route setter, Percy Bishton, from the parent wall The Climbing Works in Sheffield. Each route needed thought and time to complete.

The day began at 10:30. First of all, as usual, everyone warmed up while scoping out the routes we had to tackle troughout the day. For the Junior Male Category there were 15 routes to complete with the final 3 finishing, and hardest, routes to be completed on the Competition Wall.

There was a huge crowd present on the day. All the Youth Clubs in Ireland were well represented, a great sign for Irish climbing. The 15 routes for my category were excellent :-) , the routes were varied from ‘the steep and juggy’ to ‘the crimpy and balancy slabs’.

My favourite was route 14. This route involved an all points off dyno to a positive sloper followed by an undercut, sloper, pocket and then to the finish on a ‘thank god jug’.

All and all, this was my favourite comp to date due to the electric atmosphere, huge crowd, friends and the excellent routes. Can’t wait for the next IBL at Play At Height, Dingle on the 28th of January and the Irish Bouldering Championships on 18th of February at yes, you guessed it ……………. GRAVITY!
