Old Head of Kinsale July 2013

posted 1 Aug 2013, 05:36 by CYCC Cork

For the last year we have been working with our friends in Mountaineering Ireland to arrange access to the Old Head of Kinsale crag. Together we met with the Old Head Links and CIL to address concerns and establish a climbing code of conduct for accessing the crag.

In mid July we were granted access and spent a sunny windy Sunday on the crag with our young climbers.

A great day out and hopefully many more to follow!

Glendalough Trip Report July 2013

posted 1 Aug 2013, 05:22 by CYCC Cork

On the 17th to the 21st of July I went on a climbing trip to Glendalough. There were 15 people, including myself, on this trip along with coaches Paul Swail, Ricky Bell, Damien O'Sullivan and Mike Smith. We stayed in the IMC hut. Over 5 days we learned about trad climbing: setting up anchors, placing gear, multipitching and we also did some fun bouldering.

It’s a 40 minute walk, to go climbing in Glendalough but definitely worth it!

We spent two days in Dalkey Quarry. My favourite route there was ‘The Ghost Slab' which I seconded. Seconding a route is when the first person leads it, sets up a top rope at the top, then the second person climbs it and takes out the gear. We did this a lot during the week because it’s a great way of learing about good gear placements.

We spent one of days in Portran, bouldering on a beach. The problems were great but difficult and it’s a really nice place to go bouldering.

The highlight of the trip for me was the last day when I did a lead. A lot of people would say trad climbing is boring, but when you do a lead it’s fun, exciting, and scary all at the same time, which is the reason I love it.

Overall I had an amazing trip and I learned loads.

Thanks to all the brilliant coaches!!!
