Eight young climbers from the CYCC formed part of the 26 strong Mountaineering Ireland team that competed at the Grand Final of the Youth Climbing Series in Ratho, Scotland on Saturday June 23.

The EICA venue in Ratho, Scotland is truly immense with walls 3 times the height of our regular training venue in the Mardyke. Registration started at 8:30am and soon the more than competing 300 climbers were organised into their respective groups.

Judges, belayers, spotters and chaperons were assigned by the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) who were organising this event - the highlight of the youth climbing scene in the UK and Ireland.
While a competitive atmosphere certainly existed, there was a great family feeling to the day. Proud mums and dads watching and encouraging their kids up long and sometimes fairly difficult routes (with some fairly exciting looking arete action for older kids) made the day a bit special.

No pressure as Rich and Eddie look on at Dave C cranking out some moves on his final boulder problem.

In this our first final for all of our members, we were delighted that our young climbers did so well on the day. All were very well placed across all competing categories with special mention to Cormac D'Aughton placed 6th out of 27 competitors. All those that saw him overcome the roof section of the final boulder problem were seriously impressed! The no hands rest that he took after surmounted the roof crux added a touch of magic to his feat!

Well done to Clodagh, Hanna, Cormac, Luke, Sean, Owen, Jack and Dave! Full results can be found over on the BMC site.

Finally, CYCC would like to express its thanks to Neal McQuaid, Richard Cussen, Paul Innes, Brendan Egan, Ian Walsh and Mark D'Aughton who worked hard on coaching our Ratho climbers over the past few months.
