A number CYCC members undertook a Single Pitch Award training course in Dalkey Quarry over the St. Patricks weekend. The two day course was delivered by David Gaughran and Ann O'Connor of Setanta Adventure Training. Also taking the course was Dalkey rock climbing legend Howard Hebblethwaite co author of the Dalkey Quarry Climbing guidebook.

The Single Pitch Award (SPA) scheme provides training and assessment in the skills required to lead and supervise groups during single pitch rock climbing activities. The scope of the award covers personal climbing, safe group management, crag etiquette, environmental responsibilities and more. Candidates will learn how to become an effective supervisor, encouraging others to enjoy climbing safely, whilst also improving their own climbing skills.

Italian hitches formed a major part of pretty much every exercise.

Dave demonstrating aiding a second who has climbed above trad protection (with the aid of fourteen italian hitches, a dozen clove hitches, a pair of figure of 8s, 65 half hitches, one alpine butterfly and a jaffa cake - joking!).

The end of two busy and very productive days. From the left Andy, Richard, Dave, Ann, Mark, Howard and John.

Many thanks to Howard and Bridget for putting us up on Saturday night!
